San Diego Regional Burning Man Decompression 2009
Art Grant Recipients

Sheepytime
by Aline Roden

Sheepytime is a sleeping aid for those having trouble entering Dreamland. Sights and sound will help achieve the desired effect. Hopefully, this piece will cause folks to think about what “Dreamland” means and recall how their conception of it may have changed as they grew up. Did it expand, with adult possibilities? Or perhaps, in some ways did it shrink?

Dreamcatcher
by Spike & Bean

The dreamcatcher is a filter used to guide one's dreams. The belief is that good dreams pass through the center hole to the person. The bad dreams are trapped in the web, where they perish in the light of dawn.
We are constructing a dreamcatcher for the Dreamstation large enough for all of our fellow dreamers in Jacumba. All are encouraged to come participate by helping us adorn to this project throughout the weekend.

A Shiny New Catheter
by Jackie “AppleJack” Egger and Krystin “Nikki” Railing

“A shiny new catheter,” sadly, is not a shiny new catheter…nor a gently used one.  It is, however, a stage or platform to conjure up and wish for such gems.  This interactive wishing well will allow participants to dream up the impossible while granting someone else's.  What would you wish for?

Flaming Saguaro
by Scott Mummert

A Southwestern desert feature, the saguaro cactus, redone in rusty steel… but, with the added interest and warmth of fire.

The Plasma Garden
by Chris Dawson and Jacob Holler

We enjoy producing visually stunning interactive light sculptures; to convey an appreciation of the mind-blowing fourth state of matter, also known as plasma.

The Monkey Mirror
by Marisa Brandt and the Monkey Mirror Team

The Monkey Mirror, or Chippy as we lovingly refer to him, is an interactive art piece that changes in response to the emotions expressed by the viewer. The piece is designed to foster awareness about our own emotions and how they change the very world we perceive. The Monkey Mirror draws attention to how emotion changes our perception of art by literally changing what the viewer sees. This reflects the idea that outlook changes the world.

The Liquid O’s ‘Attitude Adjustment’
By Dennis Papenfus

For years, the San Diego Community has known of the Liquid O as this happy, rolling box, normally decorated as a present or other lively vessel, carrying the happy people inside along for the fun. This discounts the fact that the Liquid O is in fact a seriously cranky, pissed off old vehicle. These changes will bring this cranky, angry existence out for the community to enjoy and play with.

This Is A Tiny Town
By Jeremy Cooper and Jason Egger

This town symbolized how we as a community, even in the comfort of our familiar surroundings, can still be kept fenced off and isolated, by our emotions, situations, and physical beings. All the while, being surrounded by our every day lives.

Once again, the San Diego Burning Man community is proud to be able to award grants to artists for the purpose of partially funding art projects for the San Diego Regional Decompression event!  We are extremely happy to be able to give back to our community and hope this will pave the way for future San Diego festivals showcasing the amazing talent of our local artists.

Our intention is to assist and motivate artists in San Diego and the surrounding areas to share their creations with the festival participants.  While the artist expression is in the discretion of the artist, the project must be specifically created for the 2009 San Diego Decompression.  The art grants are not intended to fund Burning Man projects or projects for other events.  However, after the event, the artist shall have the right to dispose, sell, donate, repurpose or whatever he or she wants to do with their art installation.

Now for the Q & A:

What are the San Diego Regional Decompression Art Grant Committee criterion for awarding art grants?

The 2009 San Diego Decompression Art Grant Committee will review each application individually.

Each submission will be judged upon:

  • Your idea can reasonably be described as art and the members of the Art Grant Committee like the idea presented.
  • The ability of the project to stand on its own as a sculptural installation independent of the festival performances or activities, although performances or activities may accompany the installation.
  • How the art will interact with the festival participants and the environment.
  • The thoroughness of your proposal.

How many grants will be awarded?

The number of grants awarded will depend on the amount of applications received.  We anticipate that approximately 5 to 10 grants will be awarded.

Application Deadline:

The deadline for grant proposals is September 22, 2009.  We anticipate this will allow sufficient time prior to create ideas and projects.  Whether or not you attend Burning Man this year, we hope you will be inspired by some of the wonderful artistic creations displayed on the playa, and will want to create some of your own for our San Diego regional event.

When will I know if I've been awarded a grant?

The San Diego Decompression will take place October 16-18.  Therefore in order to provide you sufficient time to conceptualize and create your art project, art grants will be awarded no later than September 29, 2009.

If I am awarded a grant, how much will I receive?

The award amount will vary.  The total art grant budget for the 2009 event is $1,500.  Assuming that 5-10 projects are awarded, then the grants will be between $150-$300 per artist.

We realize that, depending on the project, the award may only cover a portion of the expenses.  However, please keep in mind that our goal is to help out the artist in seeing their creation come to life, so please do not consider the monetary amount as a limitation.

When and how will I receive funds?

Once your project is accepted to receive funding, you will be contacted by telephone.  During the call we will discuss the requirements for participating and bringing your art to the event.  We will discuss the regulations regarding setup, tear down, contingencies, etc.  Additionally, you will be required to sign a contract which will set forth the matters discussed via telephone.  Shortly thereafter, you will receive a check (via mail) for the amount of the award, less $50.  We will give you the $50 after the event to ensure that you bring the artwork and clean it up afterward.

How do I apply for an art grant?

If you are interested in submitting a proposal, submissions must be made no later than September 22, 2009 and must include the following:

  • Cover Sheet:  Artist name, address, telephone number, email address and title of artwork.
  • Physical Description:  Include the dimensions, materials, and sound component (if any).
  • Philosophical Statement:  Describe what the art means to you.  Describe what you are attempting to communicate to the festival participants.  PLEASE BE BRIEF.
  • Itemized Budget:  You must list all expenses for material costs, including transportation.  Research your costs carefully and be specific.  Do not list "contingency costs" or "artist's fee" as such expenses will not be considered. Material costs will be the only costs considered.  Total the costs and submit final amount.
  • Support Team:  Describe your anticipated support team as it relates to the creation of the art, support and dismantling/cleanup.  Describe the roles and skills needed (even if you do not have a complete crew at the time of submission).
  • Construction Schedule – Pre-event construction schedule which reflects your budget (e.g., when materials will be purchased, when stages of construction will be completed, etc. ).
  • Leave No Trace:  Breakdown and clean-up plan and schedule.  YOU MAY NOT LEAVE ANYTHING AT THE SITE.  If you do not remove your project or inadequately clean up your project location, the $50 clean up deposit may be withheld in the sole discretion of the event coordinators.
  • Plans:  Detailed drawings, sketches, and plans, hand-drawn or computer generated.
  • Application Submission:  Send your application via e-mail to: artgrants@sddecom.com.

We look forward to creating a responsible, yet comfortable setting for artists to share their work!  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at artgrants@sddecom.com.
